The Arab music with a complex rhythmic structure is fundamentally what the people of Jordan appreciate most. The smallest possible scale (the quarter-tone) is the most popular form. The vocal element is more important than the instrumental background. The instrumental part is usually an accompaniment to the singer. The most popular instruments in a traditional ensemble are 'ganun' (a variety of harp), 'ud' (a stringed instrument), 'duff' (a tambourine), 'gasabah' (a sort of cane flute) and 'durbakkah' (an earthenware drum).
Folk music consists of traditional pieces handed down within the tribes as well as contemporary songs improvised for celebrations.
